The Commonwealth is at a crossroads but rather than dwelling on the past, it should work towards generating development and promoting partnership, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning.

Marking Commonwealth Day at the Upper Barrakka Gardens where the Commonwealth flag was hoisted, Dr Muscat said that the Commonwealth brought together different ideas and disparate opinions.

The organisation was not without its limitations, but despite it all, it managed to remain steadfast in promoting the principles of democracy and good governance.

Malta, he said, was looking forward to welcoming Queen Elizabeth, the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall for CHOGM in November and would keep supporting the continued evolution of Commonwealth as a major player on the international stage.

Commenting on the theme of ‘A Young Commonwealth’, Foreign Affairs Minister George Vella said that  people aged 29 and under accounted for the majority of the Commonwealth population.

He said the Malta meeting was especially important in light of a number of ambitious projects, including defining a new global development framework and a new global climate change agreement.
