The Emigrants Commission has called for more couples or families to volunteer to care for refugee babies or young children while their mothers go to work.

Mgr Philip Calleja, director of the commission, said some 65 children were currently being cared for at the Church's Creche in Sliema or by families. The commission, he said, was grateful for this help and the families and the Creche had found this to be an enjoyable experience.

However more such help was needed.

The migrants, he explained, could only live in open centres for a period of time, after which they moved out and needed to rent a property and maintain themselves - hence the need to go out to work.

Those who wish to volunteer may contact Dar l-Emigrant on telephone numbers 21 240255 or 21 232545.
