Like most of those who watch football on TV, I fully agree with Joseph Micallef's letter (July 9) and would like to express myself how sick I get hearing the sports commentators. They simply want to show how bright they are and treat viewers like small children who know nothing about football and have no brains. They suggest what should be done, what substitutions should the coach of famous national teams make, explain what was wrong or good in every move and keep repeating things all the time.

They constantly repeat the words "as we were saying" or "as we said" and are quick to change their version if they are wrong in their forecasts, first saying things such as "it will be so difficult for the team to penetrate, if not impossible" only to soon watch the team score and win. They would then start praising the coach and the players.

There is one commentator who keeps on telling us about the life of all players, when they started playing with which team, transfers etc. His companion would begin analysing the game and make his forecasts as to how the game will develop and keep doing so even when the match is over.

It is a pity that none of them takes charge of Brazil or some other big team. I guess if they are paid just five per cent of his salary or even less that would be getting much more than the few euros they are paid for their commentary.

Commentaries (nothing like these, though) were important when we had no TV and so could not see what was going on but had to rely on the radio. Is it not ridiculous for these amateurs to keep explaining to us what we have just seen; as if we were seeing a different game?
