Tombs at a cemetery in Comino that was used for foreigners diagnosed with infectious diseases have been vandalised, prised open and an unearthed skull placed beneath a cross.

When contacted, the Gozitan Diocese said Gozo Bishop Mario Grech was looking into vandalism at the graveyard, which was used for those who died in a nearby hospital.

The cemetery is close to the chapel of Santa Marija.

It was used to bury passengers who arrived in Malta and were isolated on Comino after being diagnosed with having the plague and cholera in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. German prisoners had been kept at the Isolation Hospital (in Comino) during World War I and those who died were buried in the cemetery. In the late 1960s, these Germans were exhumed and repatriated.
