The following is a round-up of various EU-sponsored Comenius Projects and related overseas meetings in which local schools have participated with the help of funding allocated by the Maltese EU Programmes Agency under the Lifelong learning programme.

Cool-Dive

The final dissemination conference of the School Partnerships Comenius Project, 'Cool-Dive', was held at the Corinthia San Ġorġ, St Julian's, on June 25. This was coordinated by Malta's project manager Paul Dalli, and was attended by EU officials, educational professionals from several schools, administrative staff from various ministries, parents and students.

The EU-funded project ran from 2008 to 2010 and involved three schools at pre-primary education level in Turkey, Belgium and Malta.

The goal of this project was to highlight the diversity of cultures within the different EU states while giving educational staff the opportunity to share their different perspectives and discuss and improve upon their teaching practices.

The teaching staff of these establishments had the opportunity to hold meetings in their respective countries. They involved the children in a variety of activities. The pupils were given information about the languages, emblems, culture, songs, games and cuisine of their counterparts living in the other countries.

The Maltese school participating was St Cecilia's Kindergarten, whose principal, Josanne Vella Bardon, elaborated on the numerous benefits reaped by children and teachers alike from the project.

The conference was addressed by Mr Dalli and Daniella Sammut, a coordinator at the EU local agency. This was followed by a panel discussion which gave the audience a clearer picture of what 'Cool-Dive' was all about.

A presentation of mementos to the school administration as well as a token of appreciation to Mr Dalli and Ms Mifsud by Ms Vella Bardon, on behalf of St Cecilia's Kindergarten, brought the conference to an end.
