Arnold Cassola is trying to sell us the idea that more parties mean more democracy by inviting us to vote AD to promote Malta to the first division of Europe. He wants Malta to join other European countries where because parties are weak to govern alone, they opt for the coalition as a last-resort solution and not something which one works for.

Does Prof. Cassola want us to have the same chaos that our neighbour Italy has been enjoying for the last 61 years? Italy remains one of the worst governed countries with a record of one government a year. Other countries like Denmark, Belgium, Switzerland and former communist countries spend months without a government because the political parties cannot agree on the formation of a coalition.

The German coalition is under fire because it is not delivering as the two parties are sabotaging each other. Does Prof. Cassola want to put Malta in the same political instability as these countries? Does he want a coalition government that will have its parliamentary work limited because of bickering within the coalition?

Does Malta afford all this when under the present two-party system the Maltese have never had it so good?

Voting for AD means two things. Malta will have a democracy of the minority where a minor party will dictate things or else will vote the government down. Or we will have a Labour government as AD is working hard in the Nationalists' strongholds to win Nationalist votes.

In both cases Malta will have a long time of political instability which can only disturb our economic momentum. The losers will be all of us, our children and all Malta. It will be a pity to throw away all we have achieved so far because of the ambitions of persons like Prof. Cassola.
