With reference to the article Delimara Health Hazards (June 19), it is totally incorrect to state that the Delimara power station does not have emission monitors - it does, and they are calibrated and certified to EU standards. The measurements are also supported by both portable instruments and fuel analysis.

The power station does not have filters because they are simply not needed as the level of particulate emissions is well below the level stipulated in the EU Large Combustion Plant Directive. Furthermore, the power station uses fuel oil, the combustion of which does not generate any dioxins, and it is highly irresponsible of George Vella to suggest that the power station is or has been emitting dioxins. While he claims that he does not want to "cause alarm", he seems to be making a good effort to do just that.

It is also untrue that caustic soda is being dumped in Il-Ħofra Iż-Żgħira. Caustic soda is used to neutralise the boiler washdown water which is acidic, and the only water dumped into Il-Ħofra Iż-Żgħira is a neutralised clean filtrate.

Enemalta is investing in new generating plant, which will have emissions conforming to EU directives and the use of "best available technology" and which will reduce by almost 25 per cent the total annual CO2 emissions from both power stations.

It is totally misleading to state that CO2 emissions would increase by 37 per cent and, despite what Leo Brincat may think, while CO2 is a greenhouse gas it does not have a direct effect on the health of people - if it did we would all be dead, as we exhale CO2 when we breathe out.

The plant selected by the corporation after a rigorous tendering process is the one which produces electricity at the least cost while respecting and conforming to all environmental directives.

Despite what Mr Brincat or the failing bidder may believe, this is the case and the failing bidder has had ample opportunity to take legal action if he believes that his rights have been infringed.
