The Confederation of Malta Trade Unions – CMTU – this afternoon referred to a Sunday Times interview by the president of the MUT and FORUM.
It said that while it continued to believe in a gradual approach to achieving unity amongst trade unions, it was essential to continue working for a harmonious environment characterized by mutual respect and ethical trade union behavior.
"To this effect, whilst the CMTU is seeking legal advice on some of the comments made, the MUT president’s conviction that ‘this whole thing explains why FORUM is being persecuted’ or that there is ‘obstinate resistance from within the ranks of the Confederation of Malta Trade Unions’ is absolutely false and irrelevant to the whole present scenario," the CMTU said.
It said its action plan (for trade union unity) is based on principles and values which should lead to unity on a step by step basis moving cautiously from one level to another. "Some contents of this interview practically go against the spirit of such an understanding."
The CMTU said it acknowledged Mr Bencini’s 15 year tenure as MUT President and looked forward to working with his successor designate, Kevin Bonello.
