The peach tree – ħawħa (scientific name: Prunus persica), which is thought to have originated from China, was introduced into Europe from Persia at the time of Alexander the Great. Today, there are numerous varieties under cultivation, including the nectarine (nuċiprisk).

The peach tree is a deciduous shrub or small tree reaching a height of three to five metres. Its reddish twigs bear pointed leaves, which are lance-shaped and finely toothed.

Between March and April, attractive ornamental flowers are produced, decking the tree with a lively pink colour.

These solitary flowers, with numerous stamens, are formed of five ovate petals of varying lengths.

Following fertilisation, a rounded fruit is produced, which is coloured yellow or green with a reddish blush.

This velvety fruit, known as a drupe, consists of a bitter seed having an oval wrinkled shell encased by yellowish or whitish flesh. This juicy edible fruit, having a delicate aroma, is the peach fruit.

The peach tree’s DNA – a set of genetic instructions for living organisms – has recently been sequenced by scientists; this shall enable researchers to identify the beneficial traits of the tree, which help in growing better plants and fruit.

The peach has many uses in the culinary world; besides being eaten raw it may be made into jams, drinks, pastries and desserts. Moreover, oil from the peach kernel is used in aromatherapy. It is also said to be beneficial in relation to allergies and sensitive skin.
