US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton has sent a message with her deepest condolences on the death of President Emeritus Guido de Marco, saying his achievements as President of Malta and as Minister of Foreign Affairs would always be remembered.

“He was instrumental in Malta’s accession to the European Union and as president of the United Nations General Assembly he made an international imprint with his leadership,” she wrote in her letter to Foreign Affairs Minister Tonio Borg.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has expressed his “great sorrow” and “sincere condolences” upon hearing of Prof. de Marco’s death while on vacation in the south of France.

“I know his full commitment in favour of Malta’s entry into the European Union and his efforts to encourage the rapprochement between countries that share the Mediterranean. I know how deligh-ted he was at the launching of the Union for the Mediterranean, a project that joined his very old wishes,” he wrote in a message to President George Abela.

President Sarkozy also paid tribute “to the friendship he (Prof. de Marco) nurtured towards France, to his knowledge of the history and culture of our country”, adding “it is thus a friend that we have lost”.

He has also sent a personal message to Prof. de Marco’s son, Mario.
