The Labour Party has challenged the government to say which of the 96 measures in the national climate change adaptation strategy it has implemented, a year after Parliament approved it.

In a statement, Labour environment spokesman Leo Brincat said it would make more sense if Resources Minister George Pullicino saw to the implementation of the strategy rather than boast about where the country would be in the sector in 10 years’ time.

Mr Brincat also called on Mr Pullicino to give a public account of what happened to the implementation of these measures, saying that so far, nothing had been said.

“The minister wasn’t at all convincing even when he tried to rebut the World Wildlife Fund’s F rating, when it was scandalised that the government would be using heavy fuel oil for the new power station extension,” Mr Brincat said, pointing out that the minister had only been basing the progress made in comparison to the Marsa power station.

Mr Brincat also called for the setting up of the Climate Change Directorate within the Malta Resources Authority.

“Not only has this directorate not been set up yet but the government is still discussing the authority’s restructuring with the concerned entities so this toothless authority can start producing results,” he said.
