Updated: Adds jail term.

A Polish cleaner at a St Julian's establishment was today jailed for 13 months after he admitted in court that he stole a car after its owner forgot the keys in the rest room.

The man, Valdemar Vizik, admitted to stealing the car on Thursday afternoon.

He told the police that he found Toyota car keys in the restroom, tried them on the first Toyota he found outside and managed to open it and drive off.

He told the police that he was homeless and down to his last few cents and needed the car to sleep in.

The man was accused of stealing the car and committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term.
