The Health Division recently set up a consultative group on clean air to discuss proposals to be incorporated in the Public Health Act.

With the enactment of the Public Health Act, the Clean Air Act was repealed. The FOI, which is the only NGO representing the business sector that was invited to take part in these discussions, nominated FOI Council member and FOI Environment Committee chairman Godwin C. Micallef to attend these meetings.

During the first meeting of this consultative group, which was held on February 7, Mr Micallef highlighted industry's concern on the possible increased costs to be incurred by Enemalta to meet certain obligations required as a result of Malta now being a signatory to the Kyoto Protocol.

He stressed that industry cannot be burdened with any additional costs for electricity supplies, as electricity charges in Malta are already among the highest in Europe and any additional costs will erode industry's competitiveness in Malta.
