The Valletta grand prix of historic and classic cars will be held in the streets of the capital city between May 14 and 17 but this time there will only be local entries.

A similar event, the Gran Prix de Malte, was held for the first time two years ago, drawing large crowds, but last year's event was cancelled at the eleventh hour because of soaring costs to ship the vintage sports cars over. In fact, this year's event will only feature local entries.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism, Mario de Marco said the grand prix of historic and classic cars was an important element of the calendar of events drawn up to help attract tourists to Malta. Sports tourism was important for Malta, with 80,000 visitors coming here mostly for diving, Dr de Marco said.

He said foreigners were expected to take part in the event next year. The event will include exhibitions of the historic vehicles and a timed race.
