Around 50 cars dating from the pre-war period to the 1970s will be taking part in the Valletta Grand Prix on Sunday from 8 a.m.

The cars will be driven around Valletta for three times each starting from the near the Gun Post and finishing close to the Phoenicia hotel.

The cars have been divided in four categories - pre-second world war, 1950s to 1960s, 1960s to mid-1970s and classic, such as Maseratis and Ferraris.

Joseph Said, one of the organisers, noted that when the Grand Prix was organised two years ago there were 40 foreigners and 12 Maltese drivers taking part. This year, the Grand Prix was restricted to Maltese drivers.

Some of the vintage cars were on display at Freedom Square this morning together with the latest models of Alfa Romeos, Mercedeses, Audis and Jeeps.

Parliamentary Secretary for Tourism Mario de Marco said the event, he said, tied in with a number of activities which attracted both Maltese and tourists, such as the Isle of MTV, the Jazz Festival, and the Arts Festival.
