Only the pride - and perhaps the wallet - of the driver was hurt when he crashed his 1950s C- type Jaguar into an electricity pole in Great Siege Road near the Excelsior Hotel yesterday morning during the Valletta Grand prix.

Unfortunately, the classic sports car worth at least €150,000 was not so lucky and sustained extensive damage.

The incident brought out the safety car and interrupted the time trials. A Rolls Royce also spun as it turned near the Phoenicia, but managed to continue without sustaining any damage.

The Grand Prix, hosting some of the finest classic cars, has drawn several enthusiasts and revved up Valletta, though hundreds of drivers and businesses cursed the problems created by a morning traffic jam.

The races and shows continue in Valletta today.
