A union representing engineers and architects in the civil service has warned it is prepared to act to bring about an improvement in the working conditions of its members.

It said that architects and engineers in the public service have been working for the past 16 years under conditions that stemmed from a sectoral agreement reached in 1993.

Talks on a revision started two years ago and the Office of the Prime Minister promised the union on the eve of the 2008 General Elections that this process was to be concluded by end of May a year ago.

"A year on, this agreement has not been finalised. To make matters worse, the government today informed the union that talks are to be suspended indefinitely," the union said

It said the situation was unacceptable and it was determined to see that the government honoured its promise so that its members’ working conditions could be improved forthwith.

"The UPISP will take all necessary steps to see that this is achieved," the union said.
