The system where lawyers are notified by SMS whenever their civil cases are put off has been extended to the public as from today.

The Parliamentary Secretary for Justice, Owen Bonnici, said the parties can, with assistance from the Court Registry, opt to be notified through SMS about civil cases in which they are involved. They can opt to be advised about some of their cases, or all of them.

Dr Bonnici said this was part of a reform aimed at making full use of information technology.

To date, the authorities have already successfully introduced a system where decrees and evidence is sent to practitioners through e-mail.

Over the coming months, it will become possible for judicial acts to be presented in Malta or Gozo, independently of whether the cases are being held in Malta or Gozo.

Practitioners will have access from their offices to all documents currently managed by the MECAM system.

All documents in the civil registry will be scanned so that they would be easily accessible to practitioners from their offices.
