I find it disturbing that "a number of African people are being sought by the police" in connection with an alleged confrontation with a Maltese family; a husband, wife and two very young girls, during late evening on Sunday, January 13 (January 15).
In the incident, several persons described as immigrants approached the family in an aggressive and confrontational manner, after one of these persons shouted racist and provocative invective at the husband. One of the Africans was seen wielding what appeared to be a home-made weapon; a hammer-handle spiked with nails at one end. The victim described it as "some kind of a medieval weapon".
If indeed these were the facts of the case, then it is time that firm and resolute action be taken against such anti-social elements, who perhaps originate from places where law and order are non-existant. They should not be allowed to run rampant among Maltese society. This problem appears to be more insidious than first thought. We already have certain areas here in Malta that are considered "no-go areas". The Valletta bus terminus, where this incident is reported to have taken place, should not be allowed to become one as well.
Just as immigrants, if indeed the instigators of this incident turn out to be, enjoy special privileges and certain laws apply which govern their claim on our hospitality, so then there should be legislation governing their behaviour. Anyone convicted of a crime against Maltese society, including assaulting persons of authority (which has occurred more than once already), should be subject to immediate deportation regardless of his/her immigrant status, and with no recourse to appeal.
