Champions Valletta maintained their march towards a successful title defence with a 1-0 win over Balzan Youths at the National Stadium.

It was far from a convincing displays from the Citizens who despite dominating for long stretches of the match could not stamp their authority in the match with a second goal as their forwards looked short of precision in front of goals with the result that they had only one goal to show at the end of the 90 minutes.

That strike came courtesy of Brazilian midfielder William Barbosa who scored a screamer after only six minutes when he unleashed a powerful drive that flew into the top corner of the match.

In the end that goal was all that Valletta needed to stretch their lead at the top of the standings to nine points over rivals Hibernians who face Sliema Wanderers this afternoon.

Valletta midfielder William Barbosa was voted as the BOV Player of the match.
