Closed-door discussions between the government and the Opposition have been on hold for the past two weeks despite Prime Minister Joseph Muscat’s indications that an agreement could be reached.

The last meeting was on November 29 and the government has not set the next date, despite reminders by Opposition members and Malta Financial Services Authority chairman Joe Bannister, according to sources close to the talks.

Speaking on Labour’s radio station on Sunday, Dr Muscat said he was still optimistic that consensus could be found and hinted some kind of positive conclusion was round the corner.

However, Opposition Leader Simon Busuttil said both parties were worlds apart in an interview with The Sunday Times of Malta.

Sources yesterday said there was “confusion” over the discussions.
