Close friends and relatives of those killed in a shooting at a US cinema exactly one year ago have held a ceremony of prayer, song and remembrance.

Hundreds gathered in Aurora, Colorado, on Saturday to honour the victims, the survivors and those who were first on the scene. The names of the dead were read and a bell rang once for each victim.

Twelve people died in the attack, including a six-year-old girl. Seventy were hurt, including some who were paralysed.

Speakers included Aurora Mayor Steve Hogan and Colorado governor John Hickenlooper.
