Secret Society of Souptown, a story of a 10-year-old smart and brave girl Mari, who lives in Tartu, an area called Souptown, is being screened on Saturday at 3pm at the Spazju Kreattiv cinema, St James Cavalier, Valletta.

Her parents are obsessed with work so she spends most of her time with her grandfather Peeter, the professor at a local university. Mari has three best friends and together they form a secret society that plays scavenger hunting games created by her grandfather.

One day their city is affected by a mysterious poison which turns adults into children. The group sets out on an adventure beyond imagination to discover the antidote. Their path is paved with challenges – they have to run from bullies and hide from the menacing evildoer.

Can the children find the antidote and take it to the local hospital within 48 hours to save the lives of all their loved ones?

Another film, 1944, to be shown on Sunday at 7.30pm, is about the Battle of Tannenberg Line, the bloodiest conflict on the Eastern Front. Volunteer infantry battalions from Denmark, East Prussia, Flanders, Holland, Norway and Wallonia within the Waffen-SS fight off the Soviet Army’s thrust in Germany.

Half of the SS infantry consists of local Estonian conscripts motivated to resist the looming Soviet re-occupation of their small country.

Today, 70 years on, the makers of Estonia’s biggest ever box-office success, Names in Marble, try to show the hopes, aims and drama of these men and the ones close to them as objectively as possible. A thrilling war movie, full of action, love, tears and laughter that takes us back to one of the most controversial events in history.

Both films will be in Estonian with English subtitles. Entrance is free but booking is required. Call 2122 3200.
