A recent report by the Church's environmental commission was contradicting recommendations which had been made for more safety in the production of fireworks, the Ghaqda Piroteknika Maltija said.
In a statement this morning, the society said that while the Inquiry Commission on incidents in Firework Factories had recommended the use of perchlorate because this was less sensitive than chlorate, the Church Commission said this was harmful to the environment.
The society said that the situation in Malta was different to that in other countries so comparisons could not be made.
Malta did not use ammonium perchlorate, it only used potassium perchlorate to protect the health of the enthusiast and the public.
The society criticised the commission for the timing of its statement, which was only intended to add on to the pressure being made by the ecclesiastical authorities on all aspects of feasts in Malta.
