For the third consecutive year the University of Malta, the University Chaplaincy, the Students’ Council (KSU), Degree Plus and a number of other student organisations joined forces to create a Christmas atmosphere on campus and organise a charity campaign.

‘Christmas on Campus 2010’ had the theme ‘The Joy of Being a Gift’. The initiative started with an ecumenical service during which Christian leaders from different Churches and communities united to give a spiritual message for the festive season.

Throughout the week there was a packed schedule of activities, including concerts and carol singing.

A food stall was set up selling traditional Christmas sweets and drinks (mulled wine and imbuljuta). The role of volunteers was important since the food stall was open all day long.

Money was also collected at various places around the university.

A new activity this year was the prayer vigil on December 10. The vigil was Taizé in style (demonstrating ecumenism).

The Christmas concert by the Junior College orchestra was a success.

More decorations were bought and the university quadrangle looked magnificent.

The crib gave a traditional taste of Maltese Christmas celebrations. Other decorations included the Christmas tree in the middle of the quadrangle and the sledge.

A new initiative was organised by KSU allowing students to donate one euro from their stipend. I think this concept should be maintained in the coming years and promotion of the initiative could be increased.

Another activity organised was the Christmas party for children in need. This party was sponsored by the donations from student organisations. Presents for the children were bought and volunteers organised games.

The final sum raised was €4,000, which was divided equally between id-Dar tal-Providenza and l-Istrina. Thanks to the student organisations that took part in the initiative and to volunteers who dedicated their time.
