The superior general of the Society of Christian Doctrine - MUSEUM, Victor Delicata, retired yesterday after almost a quarter century at the helm. He will be succeeded by the head of the society's executive committee Natalino Camilleri.

Mr Delicata, 82, was elected superior general 23 years ago.

He said he was stepping down due to his age and because "circumstances showed it was better this way". However, he would remain an active member of the MUSEUM.

"My vocation was to teach. I feel I did my part. I am happy that I did what I had to do."

Mr Delicata officially retired during the society's General Chapter, which was addressed by Archbishop Paul Cremona, yesterday. The highlight of his term was the canonisation in 2007 of Dun Ġorġ Preca, the founder of the society,.
