The government is planning to have Mandarin taught in secondary schools if there are enough students who opt for that subject, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo told Nationalist MP Clyde Puli in reply to a parliamentary question.

Replying to another question, Mr Bartolo said 18 Form One students from 11 schools had chosen to study Arabic along with seven in Form III from four schools.

Another 15 students in Form III have been studying Arabic since Form I.

In independent schools, there were 16 students who chose Arabic.
