Chinese entry Tuya's Marriage, about a woman who struggles to support her family on the wind-swept steppes of Inner Mongolia, won the Berlin film festival's top honour yesterday.

The Golden Bear for best picture makes it a one-two for Chinese cinema at Europe's top film festivals, after Still Life won the Golden Lion in Venice in September.

The best actor Silver Bear went to Argentina's Julio Chavez for The Other, a slow-paced account of a man who goes through a mid-life crisis when he discovers his partner is pregnant.

The film, directed by Ariel Rotter, also won the Jury Grand Prix prize, effectively the runner-up award in the best film category.

Germany's Nina Hoss was named best actress for Yella, Christian Petzold's film about a woman who develops an appetite for the ruthless world of business yet is haunted by her past.

Best director was awarded to Joseph Cedar for Beaufort, about Israel's sudden withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 after 18 years of occupation.
