China's women made quick work of the Dominican Republic to cap a perfect first day of table tennis at the Olympics for the host country that is bidding for a gold sweep in its national sport.

Following the Chinese men's hard-fought victory over Greece in the afternoon, the women delivered their second win of the day in the team event without dropping a game to the Dominican Republic.

The feisty Guo Yue, 19, took to the table with aplomb in her first singles match of the tournament, yielding only 14 points to Wu Xue, the Dominican Republic's top-ranked player at 49th in the world. Guo pinned Wu way back from the table with her ferocious topspin, taking just over 10 minutes to dust her off.

World number one Zhang Yining was equally imperious in her singles match and she paired up with veteran Wang Nan, who redeemed herself after shaky play against Croatia earlier in the day. The doubles pair finished off the Dominican Republic in three quick games.

China's women now sit comfortably atop their group in the first round of the team event, needing just a win over Austria to advance on their march to what many saw before the tournament as a virtually guaranteed gold.
