Chief Justice Vincent de Gaetano presided over his last sitting today before stepping down to take up his new post as a judge on the European Court of Human Rights.

In a special sitting he was praised by the president of the Chamber of Advocates, Andrew Borg Cardona, for the way he had assumed the post eight years ago at a difficult time for the judiciary (following the resignation and subsequent arraignment of Chief Justice Arrigo).

Chief Justice de Gaetano had managed to put the judiciary back on a solid base, Dr Borg Cardona said, and his service would be a "tough act to follow".

Chief Justice de Gaetano recalled his surprise at being offered the position by then Prime Minister Fenech Adami and he thanked all those who had worked with him for their collaboration.

He also expressed his condolences following the death of Gigi Gonzi, the Prime Minister's father, and recalled his good humour.

Dr de Gaetano congratulated Silvio Camilleri, who will take over as Chief Justice.
