A chicken breeder today filed a judicial letter in the First Hall of the Civil Court calling upon the authorities to pay him a subsidy on chicken feed for the first six months of this year as promised in February.

Kalcidon Vella, who farms chickens for their eggs at St John's Poultry Farm in Rabat, filed his letter against the Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs and the Attorney General.

He said that the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs had written to chicken breeders last February and promised to pay revised subsidies to all breeders for the period from January to June of this year. But, Mr Vella told the court that the government had failed to fulfill this promise and had not paid the subsidy due for the period from March to June.

The revision in subsidies, said Mr Vella, was the result of the international crisis which had led to steep increases in the price of chicken feed. Mr Vella said that the ministry's failure to pay him the subsidy had a disastrous effect on his business.

In conclusion Mr Vella called upon the authorities to pay him the subsidy and held the authorities liable in damages.
