Andrew Chetcuti set a new national short course record in the 100m freestyle while competing in the H20 Short Course Autumn Cup, in Doha, late last month.

The Dubai-based swimmer clocked 51.76 seconds to better his previous best time of 52.5.

Chetcuti has earned a spot on Malta’s team for the 10th FINA World Short Course Championships, starting on December 15 in Dubai.

The other swimmers in the Maltese squad are Neil Agius, Andrea Agius, Edward Caruana Dingli, Daniel Galea, Mark Sammut, Davina Mangion, Melinda Sue Micallef, Nicola Muscat and Talisa Pace.

Mark Galea, the ASA vice-president and chairman of the Swimming Board, ASA Swimming Board secretary Chris Agius and national coach Andy Colbourn will be in charge of the Maltese contingent in Dubai.

The world short course championships have been held every two years since the inaugural edition in 1993. The last event was staged in Manchester in 2008.

This is the first time the championships will be held in the Middle East.

Around 1,500 swimmers from over 130 countries are expected to compete.

Meanwhile, the ASA said that the next time trials will take place today at the National Pool, starting at 10 a.m.

Swimmers from Iasis, of Inspire Marsascala, Neptunes, Sirens, Sliema and members of the national squad will be taking part in these races.
