July is the time when the Malta Shooting Federation opens its doors to non-members for its Open competitions. The All Malta Skeet and Double Trap competitions dominated the shoots last weekend.

There were no surprises this year as the most in-form shooters in respective disciplines dominated their events. Silvio Attard and Paul Vella, who in the last GSSE made up the Malta Skeet team, provided the spectacle in the first event which commenced on Saturday.

Vella shot constant good scores in the competition and reached the final on a creditable 116 score.

Attard kept on the leader's trail with 113 clays. Then, he drew his best form in the final, under the scorching sun, by shooting a perfect straight against Vella's 22.

The gap was now closed and the competition was to be decided on a shoot-off. Attard kept up his perfect streak and went on to win the coveted Skeet title.

Result: 1. S. Attard 113+25 (138); 2. Paul Vella 116+22 (138); 3. Paul Sant 108+21 (129).

The All Malta Open Double Trap championship this year was won, as expected, by shooting prodigy William Chetcuti.

He carried off the award in style, hitting an average score of 46 per round and finishing with a total of 184, clearly ahead of nearest rivals Philip Busuttil and Emmanuel Grima, both GSSE medal winners.

Result: 1. W. Chetcuti 137+47 (184); 2. P. Busuttil 127+39 (166); 3. E. Grima 126+39 (165).

The All Malta Open competitions come to a close this weekend with the Trap title. This event is on 125 and a 25-clay final. The first 75 clays will be shot this afternoon and the remaining 50 and barrage tomorrow.
