Last year's beaten finalists Chelsea drew a memorable Champions League quarter-final second leg 4-4 with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge last night but reached the semi-finals with a 7-5 aggregate victory over their Premier League rivals.

Liverpool, trailing 3-1 from the first leg at Anfield and needing to score at least three goals to give themselves a chance of saving the tie, went 1-0 up after Fabio Aurelio scored direct from a free-kick after 19 minutes.

They doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Xabi Alonso sent Chelsea keeper Petr Cech the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Chelsea, who played poorly in the first half, looked a transformed side after the break and pulled a goal back after 51 minutes when Didier Drogba got the faintest touch to a Nicolas Anelka cross.

The home side made it 2-2 when Alex scored with a blistering free-kick after 57 minutes and they went 3-2 ahead and 6-3 ahead on aggregate with a Frank Lampard goal after 76 minutes.

Liverpool, though, scored twice in two minutes in the 81st and 83rd minutes through Lucas Leiva and Dirk Kuyt before Lampard scored his second to force a 4-4 draw and send them through to a semi-final with Barcelona.

The Catalans drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich yesterday to go through with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Bayern playmaker Franck Ribery grabbed the lead just after the break with a close-range effort to restore German pride after they were demolished 4-0 in the first leg in Spain last week.

But midfielder Seydou Keita levelled in the 73rd minute with a long-range effort after a swift passing move which again highlighted Bayern's defensive frailties.

Bayern coach Juergen Klinsmann was booed by his own fans yesterday, but this result on the back of the weekend's 4-0 win over Frankfurt in the German league will have taken some of the pressure off the ex-Germany coach.

Gloria Gaynor's hit "I Will Survive" echoed around Munich's Allianz Arena before kick-off, but Bayern went one better than survival as they matched a Barcelona side who looked to believe the tie was already won.

After Ribery's goal, it looked as though Bayern were heading for a win before Barcelona awoke from their slumber.

Xavi Hernandez pulled a pass back to Keita whose shot gave Hans Joerg Butt no chance as it ended honours even.
