Chelsea drew a memorable Champions League quarter-final second leg 4-4 with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday but reached the semi-finals with a 7-5 aggregate victory over their Premier League rivals.

Liverpool, trailing 3-1 from the first leg at Anfield and needing to score at least three goals at Stamford Bridge to give themselves a chance of saving the tie, went 1-0 up after Fabio Aurelio scored direct from a free-kick after 19 minutes.

They doubled their lead in the 28th minute when Xabi Alonso sent Chelsea keeper Petr Cech the wrong way from the penalty spot.

Chelsea, who played poorly in the first half, looked a transformed side after the break and pulled a goal back after 51 minutes when Didier Drogba got the faintest touch to a Nicolas Anelka cross.

The home side made it 2-2 when Alex scored with a blistering free-kick after 57 minutes and they went 3-2 ahead and 6-3 ahead on aggregate with a Frank Lampard goal after 76 minutes.

Liverpool, though, scored twice in two minutes in the 81st and 83rd minutes through Lucas and Dirk Kuyt before Lampard scored his second to force a 4-4 draw and send them through to a semi-final with Barcelona.

Barcelona ease into semis with draw against Bayern

Barcelona drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich on Tuesday to book their Champions League semi-final place with a 5-1 aggregate victory.

Bayern playmaker Franck Ribery grabbed the lead just after the break with a close-range effort to restore German pride after they were demolished 4-0 in the first leg in Spain last week.

But midfielder Seydou Keita levelled in the 73rd minute with a long-range effort after a swift passing move between Andres Iniesta and Xavi Hernandez which again highlighted Bayern's defensive frailties.

Barcelona will play Chelsea in the last four.
