I am in full agreement with Sliema councillor Julian Galea when he recently stated: "... parking has become worse and worse by the day," no doubt referring to Sliema. But the problem here is, what can be done about it?

Has he got reserved parking for residents in mind? Has this not been declared illegal by the courts? If affirmative, why are councils still restricting parking except for residents? I noticed that one council which lost its case in court because it had restricted parking except for residents now changed this to "except vehicles registered in..." Isn't this a way to go round the court's decision?

I have always insisted on three points. First, if some councils decide to restrict parking except for residents, aren't all councils then entitled to do the same? Where will this lead us to? Are councils, or anyone else for that matter, right in restricting people from driving correctly, parking correctly or from using a public street? Why should people going about their perfectly legal business be forced to leave after a certain time and not allowed to return before a certain time?

One final point. Would it not be better if someone, anyone, in any authority decided to check every single street in Sliema thoroughly for parking abuse, misuse and related matters and do something about first? This should also include some highly dangerous driving practices by some drivers. The list is too long to mention here.
