Smart supermarket has started checking customers' bags after catching people stealing.

Despite having 48 CCTV cameras installed, the supermarket has been suffering a spate of thefts, prompting owners to introduce a policy of checking each and every handbag brought into the shop. Signs informing people their personal bags would be searched can be seen everywhere.

Doris Bonett, one of the owners, tells Cynthia Busuttil how once she picked up a crying baby from a carrycot and found tubes of hair gel hidden in the soft blanket.

But it was when the fishmonger's numbers at the end of the day did not tally with those of cashiers that the first alarm was raised.

This happened for a number of days and after CCTV recordings were scrutinised, the culprits were identified.

Stolen items include toiletries, cheese, hairdryers and chocolate bars.
