The award winning Jesenik String Orchestra, one of the most successful string orchestras of the Czech Republic will be giving its first performance in Malta tonight.

Organised jointly by the archpriest and clergy of the Parish of St Philip of Agira and the mayor and councillors of Ħaż-Żebbuġ local council, the concert will take place at St Philip of Agira Parish Church, Ħaż-Żebbuġ at 7.30 p.m.

The Jesenik String Orchestra was founded 26 year ago and is composed of 35 successful and energetic musicians all specialising in string instruments.

This orchestra is referred to as a typical string orchestra – with first and second violin, viola, cellos and contrabass. Tonight, 22 musicians from this orchestra will be performing, ensuring that the beauty of their music is also channelled towards good causes.

The repertoire of the Jesenik String Orchestra is very large – from baroque to sacred and classical music, from romantic to jazz and pop music, and the popular scores of international academy award movies. Due to the fact that this performance is being done in a sacred temple, the orchestra had to limit itself to merely performing suitable music for such an occasion. It is essential to point out that the Jesenik String Orchestra has performed in various churches, basilicas and cathedrals not only in the Czech Republic but also outside their home country.

The Jesenik String Orchestra has performed all over the world in countries as diverse as Poland, Italy, Slovakia, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Hungary, Turkey, Spain, Austria, Slovenia, Jordan, Croatia and, finally, Malta. The Orchestra won the first prize of the prestigious Europina competition and has twice won the first prize in the France World Music Festival. They have also performed sellout concerts with Japan‘s most popular piano player – Yukiko Sawa and also with renowned jazz trumpet player Laco Deczi.

The orchestra has recorded 4 CDs – one of this was indeed used as the music score for the movie “Vincent Priessnitz“.

The orchestra is conducted by František Mech, who is the chief of orchestra and who is also an instructor at the school of arts in Jeseník.
