Michael Galea, a 45-year-old Birkirkara resident who was born in the UK, appeared in court yesterday charged with a string of charges, including causing wilful damage to a number of cars in Gżira on Saturday.

Mr Galea was charged with damaging a Mazda, which damage exceeds €1,164.69; damaging two vehicles owned by the government, which damage exceeds €116.47 but not €1,164.69; damaging the wall of a private property; as a public officer committed a crime he was in duty bound to prevent; tried to seriously injure a number of police officers; caused three people and a number of police officers to fear he would commit violence in their regard or on their property; drove or tried to drive a car when under the influence of drink and refused to submit himself to a breathalyser test at the police headquarters.

The accused pleaded not guilty and the court granted him bail under a number of conditions, including a personal guarantee of €5,000.
