The partner of a prisoner was this morning granted bail against a personal guarantee of €10,000 after she pleaded not guilty to trying to traffic drugs in prison last Sunday.

Romina Cachia, 33 of Safi, was accused of committing a crime while under a probation order in trying to smuggle the drugs to prison.

Ms Cachia and her partner Silvano Cilia, 35, were charged with being in possession of heroin in circumstances which denoted it was not for their exclusive use.

Mr Cilia was charged with being a relapser.

In her submissions on bail, defence lawyer Marion Camilleri requested the court to consider the humanitarian fact that the couple had three children together.

Police inspector Jesmond Borg said that the prisons had CCTV footage of Ms Cachia handing over the drugs to her partner in front of the children.
