A Libyan man was remanded in custody yesterday after pleading not guilty to running off with a bagful of gifts given to a woman celebrating her birthday with her friends at a Paceville establishment.

Ali Muftah, 24, was also charged with the simple possession of cannabis while under arrest at the police lock-up, of committing a crime while on bail over other cases and with breaching a suspended sentence imposed in June last year.

Police inspectors Matthew Spagnol and John Spiteri told Magistrate Doreen Clarke the theft took place on Wednesday night. The bag containing the gifts amounted to some €100.

He also allegedly stole a wallet containing €25 in cash. He was also found in possession of a pair of scissors.

Lawyer Leontine Calleja, appearing as legal aid for the defendant, entered a not guilty plea.

Since no request for bail was made, the court ordered he be remanded in custody.
