A 56-year-old man from Birkirkara, who was caught smoking in a bar, was yesterday granted bail against a personal guarantee of €5,000 (Lm2,146), after he pleaded not guilty to threatening and assaulting the police.

Francis Rizzo was at a Birkirkara bar when he slightly injured a police sergeant and violently resisted the police, who were carrying out spot checks at a number of establishments late on Friday night.

He was charged with damaging the sergeant's property, threatening and assaulting him and three other constables, smoking in a prohibited place, breaching the peace and failing to give his particulars. Inspector Kevin Farrugia prosecuted.
