A Libyan national was remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to possessing 1.5 kilogrammes of heroin allegedly found in a false bottom in his suitcase on his arrival from Tripoli.

Abdurahman Mohamed Abushiba, 37, was arrested at the airport at 5 p.m. on Friday. He appeared in court on Saturday and was charged with conspiracy to import drugs. He was also charged with importation, possession of heroin with intent to traffic and possession of cannabis resin.

He pleaded not guilty.

In another case, Joseph Cordina, 50, of Sta Venera, was caught trafficking drugs on Friday next to the horseracing track in Marsa. He was charged with heroin possession and trafficking and with cocaine possession with intent to traffic.

He pleaded guilty to the charges and was jailed for two and half years and fined €4,000.
