A Nigerian national was this afternoon remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to importing some 640 grams of cannabis grass.

The court heard how 30-year-old Eshiemokhai Yakubu Okhiulu, who lives in Agrigento, arrived on the catamaran from Sicily on Monday night.

Among his personal items in his luggage, Drug Squad police found packages containing a total of 640 grams of cannabis grass.

Before Magistrate Anthony Vella, MR Okhiulu pleaded not guilty to conspiring with others to deal in drugs, importing the drug and to possession of drugs in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use.

The man, who was represented by legal aid lawyer Patrick Valentino, did not make a request for bail and was remanded in custody.

Police Inspector Nikolai Sant prosecuted.
