A middle-aged man was yesterday remanded in custody after he was charged with grievously injuring another patron in a bar brawl this weekend.
Carmelo Vella, 45, was arraigned for allegedly causing permanent injuries to George Dimech's face and index finger at Ray's Bar in Cospicua at about 11.45 p.m. on Friday. He was also charged with breaking several conditions imposed on him by the courts on previous occasions.
Inspector Jesmond Borg, who prosecuted, described Mr Vella as notorious and said he was recently granted bail for similar accusations.
He pointed out that should he not be remanded in custody, the accused would certainly influence the witnesses.
Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna therefore kept Mr Vella under preventive arrest until the testimonies could be heard.
Lawyers José Herrera and Veronique Dalli represented Mr Vella.
