Over 80 works by Maltese and Cypriot ceramists, ranging from figurative representations to abstract forms, free-standing ceramics sculptures, wall plaques and vessels, are on display at the art gallery of the Larnaca municipality.
The Sixth Cyprus-Malta Ceramics Exhibition in Larnaca, organised by the Larnaca Municipality and the Cyprus Pottery and Ceramics Association, was opened by Larnaca mayor Andreas Moiseos and will run until October 22.
The styles of the works in earthenware, stoneware and raku by the 28 artists – 14 from each of the two countries – range from the avant-garde to the traditional and the rustic. A spokesman for the promoters said the themes were meant to address the effects of globalisation.
The previous editions of the joint Cyprus-Malta exhibition were held last year at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta, at the Larnaca Municipal Gallery in 2008, at the Auberge d’Italie, Valletta in 2007, Galleria Kypriani Gonia, Larnaca in 2006 and Palazzo Vilhena, Mdina in 2005.
This year’s exhibition is sponsored by the Larnaca Municipality, the Cyprus Tourism Organisation, Emirates Airline and the Ministry of Education and Culture.
