The Nationalist Party's parliamentary group has agreed to nominate former Transport and Communications Minister Censu Galea to serve as Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives.

PN whip David Agius said the decision was taken unanimously at a meeting of the group this afternoon.

Notice of a motion for the appointment of Mr Galea was presented to the Clerk of the House of Representatives this evening.

Mr Galea has been an MP for 23 years and was whip of the PN group between 1996 and 1998.

He will succeed Labour MP Carmelo Abela, who resigned in protest over a ruling by the Speaker after a vote taking during the debate on the power station extension.
