The ceramic figure representing Charles Clews in the Bisazza Street monument to Maltese artists was decapitated when a young man kicked the head three times, CCTV footage shows.

The man first stood on the table that is at the centre of the monument, then climbed onto the top of the monument. He fell off, got up, and delivered three karate kicks at the figure, causing the head to fall off. The man then ran off. Another man who was with him walked off in another direction. The incident happened last Friday shortly before 2 a.m.

The police are investigating the incident and it is understood that other footage from a different angle exists.

Meanwhile, the authorities are looking into how the head of another figure on the monument, Victor Apap, fell off this morning. An eyewitness told timesofmalta.com that no vandalism was involved, however the authorities suspect that the figure may have been damaged earlier.

The monument was drawing attention for the wrong reason this afternoon, with visitors standing behind the damaged figure to take pictures, showing their head instead of the statue's!
