A concert of classical and traditional compositions, including a medley of carols, will be held later this month to raise money for the Malta Community Chest Fund.

Following the successful Malta Music Awards and the charity run in aid of the MCCF last weekend, the National Philharmonic Orchestra and the Saint Monica Choir have decided to lend a hand with a concert.

Called a Christmas Celebration, the activity will take place on December 18 at 7.30 p.m. at St Paul's Square, Mdina.

Doreen Zerafa, from the MCCF, said many people took most things for granted while others desperately fought for them. "Even if people donate something small, they will still deliver a strong message, which is more important than the money itself," she said.

Orchestra conductor Michael Laus said the programme would feature a variety of classical and traditional compositions, played with a modern touch, and end with carols.

The concert will include pieces such as Emmanuele Galea's Sinfonija Pastorali and Paolino Vassallo's Marcia Religiosa E Fuga.

The choir will be directed by Sister Beniamina Portelli.

James Scerri Worley, the orchestra chairman, said the activity was another initiative to bring the ensemble closer to the people and urged everyone with an interest in music to attend.

Seating is on a first-come-first-served basis and free but donations to the Community Chest Fund would be appreciated.
