I have only been driving on these islands for about two years, but I have noticed that many local roads do not have 'cat's eyes', especially the new roads which are a joy to drive on during the day.

At night, the enjoyable drive becomes very strenuous and motorists need to concentrate to guess where the next corner is. A British company, Astucia, has come out with a new 'cat's eye', which is more than a simple reflector.

The new model sits flush with the road and is as cheap as a conventional 'cat's eye'. The new studs use solar technology to store energy to power LED lights which are illuminated from dawn to dusk. It has a range of 900 metres and is ten times more powerful than the older version. The firm insists they are maintenance-free. The authorities should check them out to shed some light on our new and planned roads and bridges.
